Exactly, Band on the Run! Critical thinking is anathema to JW's. That point was made very clear to me in Anthropology class this week. My teacher said, more than once, "Question what you hear!" That is a no-no for cult followers.
There are tax incentives. It's called the Hope TAx Credit. My accountant was very happy this year when he found out we were attending college. We live in Oregon, but a friend from California said he is tax exempt thanks to attending college.

Very interesting, Terry. Obviously a new way of looking at things, for me anyway. I can now see why so many say the WT is nothing but a business. I especially liked this comment:
To the rank and file there was no Bill of Rights. The could be worked to death grinding out book and magazine sales. In fact, they had no choice but to comply since their very identity as Jehovah's Witnesses depended on demonstrations of door to door sales and hours devoted.
How many times have I heard, "You can't call yourself a witness of Jehovah unless you witness"? And the Bill of Rights comment--free labor, free advertisement, free money. But as we all know, being a witness isn't free--gas money for service, convention/assembly expenses, donations, etc. It is an expensive religion to be a part of. Mormon's are charged a flat tithe, but how much more do we give by being nickel and dimed every day of the week for our whole lives?
As for your comments re: TV--as a believer I always figured it had to do with dignity. But I think your explanation makes more sense, not only in the monetary aspect but also the exposure. So little is actually known about the WT society. I was sitting in Anthropology class yesterday and we had been given an assignment to pick apart different religions based on various perameters. The people behind me got JW's and they were talking about how surprised they were that JW's claimed they knew how many were going to heaven. I remember being surprised that such a basic part of their belief system was not commonly known.
Thanks again. Do you have a long commute or something that gives you time to think about all these things?

My hubby and i are (40 and 38) both in our first years at community college and hoping to transfer for Bachelor's or Master's degrees, depending on what's available in our rural area. We are loving it!

Jehovah's Witnesses & Higher Education
by minimus ini believe that jws demonize higher education so much, that it makes them look like weirdos!.
you and your family are penalized if someone goes to college!.
when i tell any "worldly" (aka "normal" person) that witnesess view higher education with disdain and ridicule, i always get the same response:.

LIke some have mentioned, it's not a hard line everywhere. There is an elder in my cong whose daughter is attending college. She graduated early from High School and I think she is still under 18 but I see her at the community college all the time and she's not just taking vocational classes. Here, kids under 18 can attend college for a third the price.
But in that same cong they discouraged a girl from accepting a full scholarship at an Ivy league University back east. Around here, if a kid can attend college and stay under the watchful eye of their parents and cong, its okay. This elders daughter, though, is living a bit of a double life (i.e. sneaking out at night, hanging with boys, swearing, etc.). The cong still thinks she is the perfect little pioneer sister, so I am intrigued to see what happens.

If you truly searched credible sources against JWs (there is not much doctrinal defense on this forum) and remained JW, then you lack critical thinking skills (still indoctrinated) and are spiritually deceived by the enemy of your soul (demonic).
OH YEAH!! CAN WE GET A HELL YEAH?! Godrulz rules.

Hello from NW USA
by Haulin Oats inhey there, gang.. i'm haulin oats.
i came to full awareness recently after finding a work-mate who also had "seen the light" finally.. i was born/raised a jw, having made some pretty big sacrifices in the name of the organization, even moving to where the need was greater before the start of high school.
needless to say, small mid-west farm towns don't look too highly on jw's.

I believe your story, wholeheartedly! My brothers used to take my tapes and put magnets up against them to ruin the sound. The first Bon Jovi album I bought, Slippery When Wet, my brother played it backwards because he was convinced it would have demonic messages.
One of the elders in the cong. destroyed all his albums when he 'came in the truth' and that same elder counseled me against going to a Def Leppard concert when I was 20 years old. I gave up my tickets to please "jehovah" and have regretted it every day since.
My father didn't like any kind of music and never let it in the house. I went through a fifties phase when I was 17 and he told me to get elvis out of his house and anything that had the word "Rock" and/or "Roll" in it: Jailhouse rock, Rock around the clock, etc.

Welcome Haulin Oats! Way to make use of the family study night You're fortunate your wife was so willing to consider another path. AS to your daughter, the world holds much more appeal for teenagers. Start talking about college, dances, sports, drama, whatever you know she would like to be involved in. It won't take long, especially if grandma and grandpa aren't even doing anything.
You mentioned you're in the NW, is that like Pacific NW or more midwest?

Thanks for your hard work MS! It takes courage to get on there like that. I enjoyed it. It's so nice that the "brotherhood" extends beyond the compound
